Chamois Cream Explained: What Is It, Do You Need It, and Which One Should You Choose?

If you've spent any time around cyclists or triathletes, you've probably heard someone mention chamois cream.

Maybe you've wondered:

  • What is chamois cream?
  • Do I actually need it?
  • Where do I put it?
  • Is it only for cyclists?
  • Can I use it with a wetsuit?
  • Which one should I buy?

Let's answer the most common questions.

What Is Chamois Cream?

Chamois cream is a lubricant designed to reduce friction between your skin and your clothing during exercise.  As well, the term "chamois cream" (also 'chamois creme') has now become a generic term for the group of anti-chafing products that includes bunch of types of creams (thick, thin, pasty, sticky, slick), stick format (think deodorant stick) and sprays.

So, despite the name, modern chamois cream isn't always applied to a traditional leather chamois. Instead, it can applied either to the skin, the cycling shorts pad or both and it cn even be applied to your wetsuit.

The goal is simple:

→ Reduce friction.
→ Reduce irritation.
→ Reduce chafing.

Do I Need Chamois Cream?

Not everyone does.

Some athletes can comfortably ride for hours without it.

Others wouldn't consider a long ride without it.

As a general rule, the longer the ride, the more likely chamois cream will help.

Many athletes find it especially useful for:

  • Indoor cycling
  • Long outdoor rides
  • Triathlon training
  • Ironman preparation
  • Hot weather riding
  • Multi-day cycling events

As an example, in our household, my husband is likely to use chamois cream frequently where I have only used it on multi-day cycling events and for longer indoor cycling sessions.

Is Chamois Cream Only For Cyclists?

Not at all.

Many triathletes first discover anti-chafe products because of wetsuits, especially in the stick and spray formats.

Common problem areas include:

  • Neck irritation from wetsuits
  • Underarms
  • Inner thighs
  • Sports bra friction points
  • Running hot spots

Products such as Frotti Frotta and Zone3 Anti-Chafe Balm are popular because they work well beyond the bike.

Many athletes keep one product for cycling and another for general anti-chafe protection during swimming and running.

Where Do You Apply Chamois Cream?

This is probably the question people are most hesitant to ask.

The answer is simple:

→ Apply it anywhere friction is likely to occur.

For cycling, this often includes:

  • Sit bones
  • Inner thighs
  • Areas where shorts contact skin

For wetsuit use:

  • Neck
  • Underarms
  • Areas prone to rubbing

For running and triathlon:

  • Underarms
  • Feet
  • Sports bra friction points

If you're unsure, start with a small amount and adjust based on your experience.

What's The Difference Between Chamois Cream and Anti-Chafe Balm?

They solve similar problems.

Traditional chamois creams are generally designed for cycling and saddle comfort.

The term 'anti-chafe balm' usually refers to the stick format products that are usually in a format like a deodorant stick.  These can be more versatile for taking on the go and for use with wetsuits.  Anti-chafe balms are commonly used for:

  • Running
  • Triathlon
  • Wetsuit protection
  • Everyday friction points

Many athletes end up using both depending on the activity.
