Most triathlons allow wetsuits when the water temperature is below a certain limit, typically around 24–25°C (75–77°F). Wetsuits provide buoyancy and warmth, which can improve comfort and swim efficiency in open water races.

Most triathlon wetsuits today use full sleeves, which provide better buoyancy and improved hydrodynamics in the water. For this reason, most experienced athletes and professionals choose full-sleeve suits when wetsuits are allowed in a race.

Sleeveless wetsuits are sometimes preferred by swimmers who feel restricted in the shoulders or who race in very warm water.
