🚴♂️ Spring Ride Ready: 11 Quick Checks Before Your First Big Ride

Spring riding season is here—and a quick pre-season check can make every ride smoother, safer, and more enjoyable. Before the big mileage starts adding up, take a few minutes to run through this list:

11 Point Spring Ride Checklist

1. Book your tune-up
A fresh service now can prevent annoying mid-season problems later. Catch worn parts early and start the season with confidence.

2. Check your saddle bag
Flat kit essentials matter. Tube, levers, CO₂ or pump—make sure everything is there before you need it roadside.  I know I had a flat tire on one of my last rides in the fall. I don't remember if I replaced teh tube and CO2 cartridge. I need to check that. Today.

3. Charge your lights
Even if you ride in daylight, lights improve visibility in traffic and changing spring weather.  Since I've been riding indoors for the last six months, I removed my lights for the winter ride season. I need to find the lights first, then charge them.

4. Inspect your helmet
Helmets don’t last forever. If it’s old, damaged, or you can’t remember when you bought it, it may be time for an upgrade.  We have a more in depth article on helmet lifespan that you can find here: https://elementsport.ca/blogs/news-tech/replace-cycling-helmet-expiration-lifespan

5. Check your tires
Look for cuts, wear, or aging sidewalls. Tires can dry out and crack even if they haven’t seen many kilometres.

6. Dial in tire pressure
Don’t rely on the squeeze test. Proper pressure improves comfort, grip, speed, and flat protection.

7. Refresh your kit
Worn gloves, tired chamois / old & worn bike shorts, old socks—small upgrades can make a surprisingly big difference on longer rides.

8. Prep your layers
Spring conditions can change fast. Arm warmers, vests, and packable layers help you stay comfortable all ride long.  In my case, again, I need to dig this stuff out of storage—it's been awhile.

9. Check your cleats
Worn cleats can feel sloppy, affect pedal engagement, and sometimes contribute to knee discomfort.

10. Top up maintenance supplies
Chain lube, cleaner, sealant, spare batteries—having basics on hand keeps things easy all season.

11. Quick bolt check
Bottle cages, stems, seatposts, racks—tighten loose hardware now before it turns into a ride-ending rattle.

Need help with any of the above? We’re here to help get you ready for your best riding season yet. 🚴♀️🚴♂️
