About This Design
Some rides look reasonable on the map.
This was not one of them.
A wrong turn with my friend James led us onto a road that turned into a brutal, unrelenting climb — no shade, no mercy, just heat and gravity doing their worst. We stopped a few times on the way up, the kind of stops where no one really talks because there’s nothing useful to say.
At the top, there was a small clearing beside the road. Between us and it: a ditch. Dry, dusty, completely undignified. We didn’t hesitate. Bikes on the ground, bodies in the ditch, staring at the sky for a full five minutes just trying to remember how breathing works.
The ride home was mostly downhill — narrow shoulders, unfamiliar roads, and James white-knuckling every descent. But we made it. No dogs. No disasters. Just another ride that would never make a highlight reel but somehow became unforgettable.
